There's 2 questions that I often get asked when cleaning a customers windows.

1. What do you use? ( which this article answers )

2. How often should I get my windows cleaned?

Well, the short answer is when they get dirty!

But seriously, the frequency of your window cleaning will vary according to where you live.

Twice a year is usually enough, but depending on where you live and the style of windows you have, more frequent window cleaning may be necessary.

You may also want to read why having your windows cleaned in winter is a great idea.

Coastal Areas

Coastal areas for example, are going to need more regular cleaning due to the amount of salt air that they are exposed to.

I have literally cleaned external windows and balustrade glass during winter months for customers who's homes are very close to the beach front and returned the next day to finish the job, only to find my hard work ruined by coastal winds coating the glass in a layer of salty slime.

Does this mean it's pointless cleaning windows on coastal homes?

No, not at all.

When left, the salt and grime simply keeps on building up, which can not only degrade your glass and frames, but makes for a bigger job when they are finally cleaned.

If you have a home that is exposed to these conditions, I would recommend window cleaning at least 4 times per year.

Of course, the internal windows may only require once a year, depending on your household and if they are subject to tiny hands or furry noses!

If your home is set further back from the beach, at least twice a year may be sufficient, but if you're noticing salt build up, then perhaps more regular cleaning may be necessary.

Rural Properties

Other areas where windows are subject to more frequent cleaning are rural and semi-rural properties.

The windows in these homes can be subject to more dust, but especially insect spots and window spiders and cobwebs, not only on the glass itself, but the frames too.

I used to have a customer with a rural property that I cleaned every 3 months.

Every time I went back, it was like I'd never been!

There was so many insect spots on the windows and frames.

Suburban Homes

For most suburban homes, I recommend having your windows cleaned twice a year.

Once during the winter months (which I'll explain in detail in another article) and once over the summer months.

But in brief, dust builds up over the drier months, so it's a good idea to have your windows cleaned during winter so this dust and rain won't create hard water stains.

There are exceptions of course.

I have customers with 2 storey homes in areas that are subject to dust from the Cockburn Cement Factory and I can clean their windows 3 to 4 times per year.

Also, if there's building or construction work that you're down wind of, this can also create a need for more regular cleaning.

Fly-Screens and Doors

Don't forget, it's not just windows and frames that get dirty.

For fly-screens to keep looking their best, they too need regular washing.

When left for extended periods of time, screens can lose their new look and start to appear older &and not as fresh as they should be.
